The Killing of Fr. Niall Molloy Winner RTS Awards 2022
2 x 50min documentaries for RTE One. TX September 2021.
Flawless Films, Producer Sharon Lawless
Director Adrian McCarthy
This two part investigation into the unsolved murder of a priest found in the bedroom of a wealthy couple in rural Ireland in 1985.
An engrossing delve into the many mysteries that still surround this most intriguing of
1980s scandals. Definitive answers were not forthcoming but Adrian McCarthy’s
elegantly made two-parter worked exceptionally well on distinct levels: both as true
crime documentaries and vivid social histories. The jaw dropping strangeness of late 20th century
Ireland has rarely been more evocatively encapsulated.
LIAM FAY – SUNDAY TIMES
The forensic precision and commendable lack of sensationalism make it a superb riveting true-
crime documentary. It breaks the chains of the genre to become something more.
PAT STACEY – THE HERALD
The events chronicled in The Killing of Father Niall Molloy feel almost too extraordinary
to have actually happened.

Our Town was an organic and coherent piece of documentary making. Our Town felt wholly authentic and faithful and heartfelt.
EILISH O'HANLON - SUNDAY INDEPENDENT
It is to the credit that RTÉ that it has made a documentary that looks on the bright side rather than wallowing in angst, as was surely the temptation.
Though sunny vibrations dominate, Our Town doesn't pull its punches.
ED POWER -IRISH TIMES
Across the three episodes, the production delivers a vivid portrait of a modern Irish urban centre in all it's thrum and tattiness, optimism and despondency. It also underscores the enduring power of small towns as nurseries for big ideas.

Portrait of a Gallery
78 Mins,RTE 1, TX June 27th 2017
Wildfire Films, Director Adrian McCarthy
Filmed over three and a half years, this documentary depicts life in the NGI as the 80% of the buildings are closed to the public. We learn about the gallery through it's director, Sean Rainbird, Art Curators and conservationists. We also follow the progress of the massive refurbishment job being done on the historic buildings which have been closed for six years.
Excellent documentary...a brilliant piece of criticism - A study in contrasts and juxtapositions, light and shade, it knows the value of an image, the sly interplay of aligning scenes, how to draw the eye to the things you would not se otherwise - Irish Times
Nominated IFTA 2018

2 Lukes
24 mins, RTE 1, TX Easter Monday 2019
Wildfire Films, Director Adrian McCarthy This is the story of 2 Lukes.....actually 2 Luke Kelly sculptures. An affectionate story of how musical legend Luke Kelly was to be honoured with 2 statutes, one on the Northside of Dublin and the other on the Southside. For decades Luke Kelly's family and friends campaigned for a statue of Luke Kelly in Dublin, but out of the blue there were 2 statues. A light and short doc. Ray D’Arcy RTE Radio One 'A delightful, beautiful, heart warming documentary with a big soul. One of the nicest documentaries I’ve seen in a long time' |
Leaving Again
52 mins, RTE 1, TX Autumn 2018
Wildfire Films, Director Adrian McCarthy Imagine as an adult volunteering to go back to repeat the Leaving Certificate exams? That's what 2fm broadcaster Stephen Byrne did. He didn't do it over two years like the rest of Ireland's students but over a 9 month period. This punishing timescale coupled with Stephen's constant traveling for work commitments pushed Stephen over the edge. At the heart of the documentary was Stephen's personal story from the first time he did the Leaving Cert, a time when he was dealing with his sexuality and being a new star on RTE young people's shows. The big question on Stephen's mind was, "Is the Leaving Cert fair?" |
The Abbey , A Riot of their Own
60 mins, RTE 1, TX Autumn 2018
Lifeblood Films, Director Maurice O'Brien The Abbey Theatre is undergoing a period of great change with the hiring of two new artistic directors from the UK. (Graham McLaren and Neil Murray). This documentary is an insight into the dramas of running a modern theatre. Graham and Neil have doubled the amount of productions in The Abbey, but this brings it's own pressures on a poorly resourced institution with limited space to work. Balancing artistic merit and ticket sales is a challenge but our director's ambition is to give the national theatre back to the people. "No matter where you are in the country, no matter how much money you have, you should have access to your national theatre" Graham McLaren. |

Pull Like a Dog
RTE One - TX 27th December 2016
Wildfire Films Director, Adrian McCarthy 1 x 52 min This documentary focuses on Cork's finest, the O'Donovan Brothers, Olympic medalists. We see their serious side and discover what makes them the serious contenders they have proved to be. Paul the younger brother is the fastest lightweight rower in the world and his brother and team mate Gary is very close behind. This was quite an intense but fun edit and I hope that we have captured the essence and deserved glory of these inspirational young men. Probably one of the most revealing and insightful portraits of any athletes in years - Evening Herald Inspiring stuff. Packed with comedy moments while a fascinating look into how the O'Donovan brothers deal with pain. Another outstanding documentary from RTE. Balls.ie Nominated IFTA 2018 |
Hidden Impact
RTE One - Wildfire Films
Director Adrian McCarthy
Winner IFTA 2016 - Best Sports Programme
Irish Times - Excellently researched, clearly presented and deeply persuasive. Not a stone was left unturned in Adrian McCarthy's and Wildfire Film's documentary Hidden Impact. It makes for deeply unsettling yet essential viewing.
Sunday Times - Hidden Impact was a hard hitting, methodical and well structured assault on a vexed subject.
Sunday Independent - It was an outstanding piece of work and I could not recommend it more highly to anyone concerned with this matter.
Wildfire Films superb documentary on concussion shown on RTE last week should be looked up by every rugby parent.
With rugby's popularity at an all time high, the issue of concussion is becoming more of a concern. This one hour documentary explores concussion through doctors, scientists, journalists, professional players and schoolboys. With so little known about the brain and concussion, are today's players guinea pigs? The longterm risk of developing early onset dementia or CTE as a result of repeated concussion is now established. So are the rugby unions and schools doing enough to minimise this?

Time Out, London - It establishes Father Ted as a unique show, big hearted, yet sneakily subversive, traditional yet surreal, unworldly yet brilliantly pop culture savvy. Watching O'Hanlon, Kelly and Norton is great fun, yet the film has a melancholy edge too with the absence of Dermot Morgan clearly still keenly felt by all involves. Lovely Stuff.

Not Fade Away
RTE One
Director Roy Esmonde
In the wet and windy summer of 1913 two young women arrived in Ireland from France. Marguerite Mespoulet and Madelaine Mignon were women on a mission - to document what they regarded as the dying remnants of a great Celtic culture. During May and June 1913 they made a total of 75 colour photographs, stunning images, many with the delicacy of paintings, which together with their travel notebook, form a unique and fascinating record of an Ireland that, even then, was quickly fading away. (First shown in August 2004.)
